I Read Some Marx And I Liked It

A funny clip I just found thanks to a link from the Left Party of NRW (a German Province). You can find the original that inspired the song, the Communist Manifesto, here.

"A peace crime" - committed by the Israeli PM?

"Israel does not want peace with Syria. Period. It prefers the Golan over peace with one of its biggest and most dangerous enemies. It prefers real estate, bed and breakfasts, mineral water, trendy wine and a few thousand settlers over a strategic change in its status."
This is Gideon Levy's argument in today's article "A peace crime" in the Israeli Newspaper Haaretz.

Here are the first paragraphs. You find the complete text online.

It couldn't have been spelled out more explicitly, clearly and emphatically. Read and judge for yourselves: "Our position is clear: When Israel returns the entire Golan Heights, of course we will sign a peace agreement with it .... What's the point of peace if the embassy is surrounded by security, if there is no trade and tourism between the two countries? That's not peace. That's a permanent cease-fire agreement. This is what I say to whoever comes to us to talk about the Syrian track: We are interested in a comprehensive peace, i.e., normal relations."
Who said this to whom? Syrian President Bashar Assad to the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir last week. These astounding things were said to Arab, not Western ears, and they went virtually unnoticed here. Can you believe it?
What more can Assad say that he hasn't already? How many more times does he have to declare his peaceful intentions before someone wakes up here? How long must he knock in vain on Israel's locked door? And if that were not enough, he also called on Turkey to work to calm the crisis with Israel so it can mediate between Israel and Syria.

Considérant l'ampleur des crimes et des mensonges commis par la police lors du G8-G20, où 1105 manifestantEs furent arrêtés sans raison valable ;
considérant que 16 manifestantEs (en date du 6 juillet) sont encore incarcérés et que 263 personnes, après 9 à 10 jours de détention, ont reçu des charges complètement surréalistes telles que complots;
considérant les fouilles, les détentions et les arrestations abusives, arbitraires et massives;
considérant que nous avons toujours le droit de manifester au Canada et que ce droit est remis en question par ces stratégies répressives ;
nous demandons :
  • la libération immédiate de l'ensemble des prisonniers et prisonnières arrêtés lors des manifestations entourant le G8/G20 et l'abandon de toutes les charges sans exception aucune ;
  • la destruction des fichiers et informations ramassés sur les milliers de manifestantEs;

    Panitch: G20 commits itself to more neoliberalism

    After the G20 summit and the actions against it I would like to share an interview by The Real News Network with Leo Panitch, professor at York University in the North of Toronto. From his point of view the G20's main objective is the free movement of capital and strengthening power of global elites. He also says that protesting against this is far from being enough. The Left has to organize in between these meetings in order to change the balance of political power within the member countries. He also has a pratical suggestion to spend a billion dollars: Free Transit in Toronto for a whole year.

    You can find more independent media coverage of the G20 and other interesting subjects on their website and in their youtube channel.

    David Harvey: Crises of Capitalism - RSA Animate

    Here is an animated part of David Harvey's lecture at the RSA in April 2010 in which he asks if it is time to look beyond capitalism towards a new social order that would allow us to live within a system that really could be responsible, just, and humane? I say: yes it is time! :P

    Quote: "Any sensible person right now would join an anti capitalist organisation. And you have to." :)
