Metallica: One

After the Summer Festival in Quebec City which ends today, I feel like sharing a great song with you, although Metallica didn't play here.
The classic "One" was the first Metallica song for which a music video was created. It debuted on MTV on January 20, 1989. The video is almost entirely in black & white, and features the band performing the song in a warehouse. It features dialogue and several scenes from the 1971 film adaptation of the antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (book, film). Timothy Bottoms can be seen starring as Joe Bonham, the main character in the book which deals with the destiny of a young US-American soldier trying to ask the doctors for relief (death) because of his injuries: He is a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to reason though.
I still haven't seen the film nor read the novel (exept an interesting extract), but I'll try to get both soon.

I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much
too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell
